Advertising is the trickiest part in the proxy business. Proxies make money from advertising, so you need to drive traffic which clicks on your ads to your proxy. One way to do that is through proxy toplists. These are websites which list proxies and most of them are free. A few of them can command a fee because they are very popular (e.g. proxy.org).

This technique of driving traffic is very controversial amongst proxy administrators because some say that listing your proxy on a website makes it easier for network administrator to grab their URLs and block them. Although that might be true, the potential users of your proxy is huge and it’s practically impossible for all network administrators to block a specific proxy. I am not using it because I prefer to buy newsletter links (I will post on that separately) but also because I think it’s too much work to submit a network of proxies to hundreds of toplists.
